Home Shopping: Hand-drawn screenprints at Mengsel Design

The South African designer Luzelle van der Westhuizen studied jewellery design in Cape Town, then set up her own studio. In 2009, she moved to London and launched her home accessories brand, Mengsel Design. The name is the Dutch and Afrikaans word for "mixture", and it suits Luzelle's work, which is influenced by both African and Scandinavian design, perfectly.

She screen-prints her hand-drawn patterns on to tea towels, cushion covers and paper. The simple Bigger Boat design is one of my favourites. It reminds me of Japanese origami geometrics, with fan-shaped waves and a little ship silhouette on the horizon. Available in sea green or hot coral, it's a winner.

I've got a real thing for neon pink at the moment, so Luzelle's brighter screen prints are on my wish list. Her Robots in Love print is rather random but completely irresistible in hot fluorescent pink. The Moka Express collection is up my street, too, with retro Italian coffee makers in a rainbow of colour options. There are matching tea towels as well as fun rooster patterns that are reminiscent of Scandinavian-style designs.

The list of products on offer is short but sweet. Every item has been well thought out. What really makes Mengsel Design stand out is the amazing range of colours that Luzelle uses and offers. Whatever hue you've chosen for your wall, there's bound to be a print or an accessory that will complement it, so you can get the perfect mix yourself.
