Shopping in the UAE while struggling with a large baby bump or tiny newborn can be a challenging exercise, as first-time mums Kirsten Fairfield and Paula Harrington discovered. Their experiences led the Dubai-based friends to identify a gap in the market here for an "under one roof" online store where shoppers in the region could order and receive their goods simply, quickly and without having to fork out for expensive shipping costs.

In 2009, the pair pooled their business acumen and skills to set up Bubs Boutique, stocking maternity and baby essentials, clothes and decorative nursery accessories.
The emphasis here is on cool and contemporary rather than cute, with products sourced from independent labels around the world with strong ethical policies. In addition to the delightful range of clothes for ages 0-5 (by labels including Organics For Kids and Aunty Ollie), highlights include nursing cushions in lovely vintage-style floral and ticking fabrics, vibrant print blankets and changing mats, anti-allergen room purifiers and good old traditional wooden toys made from non-toxic materials such as organic rubber wood.
Bubs Boutique also stocks gift baskets, bouquets, stationery and a wide range of organic skincare products.
What really caught our eye, of course, was the nursery decor range, which includes screen-printed personalised cushions (stylish enough to last beyond toddler-hood) and the beautiful Love Mae fabric wall decals, as featured in last week's Home Shopping.
Our favourite item though, has to be the sweet typographic posters in red, navy or duck egg blue, featuring words and phrases for little boys or little girls to dream of - and adults to remember.

Troy Payne, head chef at Abu Dhabi’s newest healthy eatery Sanderson’s in Al Seef Resort & Spa, says singles need to change their mindset about how they approach the supermarket.
“They feel like they can’t buy one cucumber,” he says. “But I can walk into a shop – I feed two people at home – and I’ll walk into a shop and I buy one cucumber, I’ll buy one onion.”
Mr Payne asks for the sticker to be placed directly on each item, rather than face the temptation of filling one of the two-kilogram capacity plastic bags on offer.
The chef also advises singletons not get too hung up on “organic”, particularly high-priced varieties that have been flown in from far-flung locales. Local produce is often grown sustainably, and far cheaper, he says.

• Founded in 2014, Telr is a payment aggregator and gateway with an office in Silicon Oasis. It’s e-commerce entry plan costs Dh349 monthly (plus VAT). QR codes direct customers to an online payment page and merchants can generate payments through messaging apps.
• Business Bay’s Pallapay claims 40,000-plus active merchants who can invoice customers and receive payment by card. Fees range from 1.99 per cent plus Dh1 per transaction depending on payment method and location, such as online or via UAE mobile.
• Tap started in May 2013 in Kuwait, allowing Middle East businesses to bill, accept, receive and make payments online “easier, faster and smoother” via goSell and goCollect. It supports more than 10,000 merchants. Monthly fees range from US$65-100, plus card charges of 2.75-3.75 per cent and Dh1.2 per sale.
• 2checkout’s “all-in-one payment gateway and merchant account” accepts payments in 200-plus markets for 2.4-3.9 per cent, plus a Dh1.2-Dh1.8 currency conversion charge. The US provider processes online shop and mobile transactions and has 17,000-plus active digital commerce users.
• PayPal is probably the best-known online goods payment method - usually used for eBay purchases - but can be used to receive funds, providing everyone’s signed up. Costs from 2.9 per cent plus Dh1.2 per transaction.
