Can showbiz love endure in Hollywood or Bollywood? These days, it seems the answer is no. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are the latest Hollywood pairing to have called it quits. This prompts us to take a look back at some of the other celebrity splits that have rocked Tinsel Town over the years.
Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth
The couple met on the set of The Last Song in 2009. They had an on-and-off relationship that saw them break up in 2013 but reunite in 2015.
They married in 2018 at Cyrus' home by holding a small wedding in Franklin, Tennessee among a group of family and close friends. However, just eight months later, it was announced via a statement that the pair have "agree to separate."
Liam Payne and Cheryl
The musical coupling announced their split in July 2018. Even though they had a 10-year age gap, they seemed to make it work. After all, they even had a son named Bear together. However, the couple lasted for two-and-a-half years before calling it quits. They first met 10 years ago when Payne auditioned for The X Factor UK while Cheryl was one of the judges. The future One Direction star was just 14 at the time.
Anna Faris and Chris Pratt
The couple shocked Hollywood after announcing they were splitting after 10 years together. They first met in 2007 when they were portraying love interests for the film Take Me Home Tonight and were married by July 2009. While she was initially a bigger star at the beginning of their relationship with roles in The House Bunny and Scary Movie, Pratt would soon become a familiar face after appearing in Parks and Recreation and taking a starring role in Guardians of the Galaxy. The duo both have comedic musings so it seemed that they were destined for each other but by 2018, their divorce was finalised.
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston
They seemed like the Hollywood golden couple. She was starring in the hugely popular television show Friends, while he was a mega movie star who had been in films such as Fight Club and Meet Joe Black. After two years of dating, the couple were married on July 29, 2000. However, just five years later, they filed for divorce amid speculation that perhaps Hollywood's most eligible bachelor had been unfaithful. She has since married fellow actor Justin Theroux but the couple divorced as well in 2017.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie
Not long after his split, Pitt began to date Angelina Jolie. There were rumours she was the cause of the dissolution of his marriage to Aniston. They admitted falling in love during the filming of Mr and Mrs Smith in 2004, but denied having an affair. In May 2006, she gave birth to their daughter Shiloh. In 2014, the couple finally married. However, as long as it took for them to tie the knot, it was just two years following the nuptials that Jolie announced she was filing for divorce.
Farhan Akhtar and Adhuna Bhabani Akhtar
Unions in Bollywood too have had their fair share of trouble. Farhan Akhtar and Adhuna Bhabani Akhtar were together for 16 years before filing for divorce in October 2016. They dated for three years before marrying in 2000. The pair has two daughters together, were once dubbed "Bollywood’s most stylish couple" and seem to have remained pretty amicable since the break-up.
Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck
Jen and Ben seemed like another Hollywood couple who would go the distance. The couple began dating in 2004 and married a year later. Throughout their 10-year partnership, they had three children. However, just one day after their 10-year anniversary, "Bennifer" announced they had separated and intended to divorce. The divorce has yet to be finalised.
Janet Jackson and Wissam Al Mana
While he may not be a Hollywood celebrity, this split caught a lot of people off guard. In her third marriage, it seemed she had finally found the one in the Qatari businessman. Jackson married Al Mana in 2012, and even postponed her world tour in 2016 so she could start a family with him. There were also rumours of her possibly converting to Islam. In January 2017, she gave birth the couple's son Eissa — three months later, she announced their split.
Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh
Another shocking split in Bollywood involved two stars who seemed a bit unlikely to have a successful union from the start. She was 12 years older than him and converted to Islam before their marriage in 1991. In 1993, Singh retired from acting to settle into family life with her husband. She returned to screen in 2002's 23rd March 1931: Shaheed and two years later, the couple divorced. The former couple were together for 13 years and together they have two children. He has since remarried fellow Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor.
