Sontaya is obviously one of the most magical places to eat in the capital, not to mention delicious. A meal out at the St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort’s Thai restaurant, which is set apart by its reflective waterways, is almost as relaxing as a weekend away.
Another how enthusiastic and well-informed the staff are about the food, which is complex, intricate and impeccably served. And this week there even more of a reason this week to head there: the celebration of the Thai New Year, Songkran, on until Sunday.
The festival, which marks the sun’s entry into the zodiac sign of Aries, is traditionally marked with special food, music and dancing. To mark it, Sontaya’s Thai Chef de Cuisine Peter Peerapong is offering a special seven-course menu representing dishes from the seven different areas of Thailand.
Dishes include butterfly pea flower dumplings and stuffed baby aubergine with braised Wagyu cheek. In addition to the food, the meal be accompanied by live Thai music, dancing, and Thai boats, courtesy of the Thai Tourism Authority. Be sure to make a reservation, too, to secure one of the sought-after outdoor tables, which have dwindled in their number this week to make room for the performances.
The evening also offers the chance to win some pretty great prizes, including a stay in the resort’s Thai Spa Suite, a Thai massage and candle-lit dinner for two on the beach.
• The Songkran menu is available for dinner, from 6.30pm-10.30pm for Dh300 per person plus taxes and fees. For more information on The Thai Festival or for reservations, please call 2 498 8008 or visit www.sontayaabudhabi.com
