Clean-eating enthusiasts in Dubai just got a boost with the opening of a new Lebanese organic cafe. Hala offers organic products along with fresh healthy meals with their focus being on an authentic and wholesome dining experience.
The menu includes a mix of traditional and modern Levantine cuisine by way of home-made style offerings
“Hala is Levantine culture served on a plate of good-for-you, delicious food,” says cafe boss Ramy Sleiman. “The organic and healthy inspiration isn’t something new to Levantine cuisine, but rather forgotten. We’ve thoughtfully sourced all ingredients from across the Levant to create authentic dishes with the diverse flavours, tastes and cultures of the Middle East.”
Hala is one of the only places in Duabi that offers organic food from Levant. Besides clean food, the space includes modern pop culture artworks, a retail section for organic and home grown produce, homemade jams, olives, olive oil, top quality honey, Lebanese zaatar and other fresh herbs.
“Dubai is a melting pot of diverse cultures and nationalities while still being very much a blend of the Levant, and this representation was the vision for Hala,” says Antonio Gonzalez, chief executive of the Sunset Group, the hospitality group bringing the concept to the Emirate.
“We know there is a real appetite for healthy casual dining in Dubai and Hala encompasses all that is good for the body and soul.”
Open from 8am every day, Hala offers a variety of breakfast dishes, ranging from organic shakshuka to Hala’s variety of hummus fusions, with ingredients sourced from Lebanon to Jordan as well as local organic producers. Hala also dishes up a wider range of Lebanese and Levantine specialties.

Why it pays to compare
A comparison of sending Dh20,000 from the UAE using two different routes at the same time - the first direct from a UAE bank to a bank in Germany, and the second from the same UAE bank via an online platform to Germany - found key differences in cost and speed. The transfers were both initiated on January 30.
Route 1: bank transfer
The UAE bank charged Dh152.25 for the Dh20,000 transfer. On top of that, their exchange rate margin added a difference of around Dh415, compared with the mid-market rate.
Total cost: Dh567.25 - around 2.9 per cent of the total amount
Total received: €4,670.30
Route 2: online platform
The UAE bank’s charge for sending Dh20,000 to a UK dirham-denominated account was Dh2.10. The exchange rate margin cost was Dh60, plus a Dh12 fee.
Total cost: Dh74.10, around 0.4 per cent of the transaction
Total received: €4,756
The UAE bank transfer was far quicker – around two to three working days, while the online platform took around four to five days, but was considerably cheaper. In the online platform transfer, the funds were also exposed to currency risk during the period it took for them to arrive.

Ziina users can donate to relief efforts in Beirut
Ziina users will be able to use the app to help relief efforts in Beirut, which has been left reeling after an August blast caused an estimated $15 billion in damage and left thousands homeless. Ziina has partnered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to raise money for the Lebanese capital, co-founder Faisal Toukan says. “As of October 1, the UNHCR has the first certified badge on Ziina and is automatically part of user's top friends' list during this campaign. Users can now donate any amount to the Beirut relief with two clicks. The money raised will go towards rebuilding houses for the families that were impacted by the explosion.”
