Bangkok is famous for its street food, and one of the most famous delicacies is the sweet treat called kanom buang: little crepes filled with coconut cream and topped with other sweet or savoury delights. Dumplings, duck, spicy noodles, curries and more can all be found on the streets of Thailand’s most populous city. Even crickets, ants, cockroaches and other creepy crawlies are widely available.
Now you can get a taste of Bangkok’s famous street food in Abu Dhabi. From September 18 – 26, the Dusit Thani Abu Dhabi will host a week-long festival devoted to the cuisine. Executive guest chef Chalong Sakkapalankul from Thailand will be in the capital dishing up signature street foods for diners at Dusit Thani’s restaurant Benjarong. Items on the a la carte menu include River Prawns Tom Yam Narm Khon (spicy shrimp soup), Kapoh Pla (fish maw soup with shredded chicken), Guay Tiew Pla (fish balls noodle) and Phad Ped Nua (wok fried red curry with beef and aubergine).
Unfortunately, (or fortunately, depending on your outlook), there will be no crispy insects on the menu.

The flights
Whether you trek after mountain gorillas in Rwanda, Uganda or the Congo, the most convenient international airport is in Rwanda’s capital city, Kigali. There are direct flights from Dubai a couple of days a week with RwandAir. Otherwise, an indirect route is available via Nairobi with Kenya Airways. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, local operator Kivu Travel can organise pretty much any kind of safari throughout the Virunga National Park and elsewhere in eastern Congo.
Safety 'top priority' for rival hyperloop company
The chief operating officer of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Andres de Leon, said his company's hyperloop technology is “ready” and safe.
He said the company prioritised safety throughout its development and, last year, Munich Re, one of the world's largest reinsurance companies, announced it was ready to insure their technology.
“Our levitation, propulsion, and vacuum technology have all been developed [...] over several decades and have been deployed and tested at full scale,” he said in a statement to The National.
“Only once the system has been certified and approved will it move people,” he said.
HyperloopTT has begun designing and engineering processes for its Abu Dhabi projects and hopes to break ground soon.
With no delivery date yet announced, Mr de Leon said timelines had to be considered carefully, as government approval, permits, and regulations could create necessary delays.

Pharaoh's curse
British aristocrat Lord Carnarvon, who funded the expedition to find the Tutankhamun tomb, died in a Cairo hotel four months after the crypt was opened.
He had been in poor health for many years after a car crash, and a mosquito bite made worse by a shaving cut led to blood poisoning and pneumonia.
Reports at the time said Lord Carnarvon suffered from “pain as the inflammation affected the nasal passages and eyes”.
Decades later, scientists contended he had died of aspergillosis after inhaling spores of the fungus aspergillus in the tomb, which can lie dormant for months. The fact several others who entered were also found dead withiin a short time led to the myth of the curse.
