One month before crown prince Naruhito of Japan is due to take over the Chrysanthemum Throne from his father, Emperor Akihito on May 1, a chef in Tokyo has created a ginormous burger in his honour.

Aptly named the Golden Giant burger, the sandwich weighs three kilograms, and comes with slices of Wagyu beef, foie gras and black tuffles. The oversized buns, which are dusted with flecks of gold, are about the same size as a football.

The burger measures 10 inches in diameter, and will be served from April 1 until June at the Oak Door steakhouse at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo hotel, for a staggering 100,000 yen (Dh3,315).

Chef Patrick Shimada, who is a fourth-generation Japanese-American and creator of the jumbo burger, said: "We wanted to do something to celebrate the new emperor and a new era for Japan. It also gets me more in touch with my Japanese roots ... an American-style burger using Japanese ingredients, it's kind of like myself in a bun."

Other large portions

The Golden Giant is by no means the largest burger in the world. That particular title goes to a 352.44kg creation by Juicys Outlaw Grill in Oregon in the United States.

The largest pizza, meanwhile, is served at Big Mama's and Papa's in California, and measures 4.5 feet by 4.5 feet.

Hahndorf Inn in Australia does a three-feet-long German hot dog, while one of the largest meals in the world is a traditional Bedouin dish that involves a whole camel stuffed with a lamb, stuffed with a chicken, stuffed with fish.
