How else do you celebrate Indian Independence Day than with the world's most expensive cake? Broadway Bakery in Dubai say they have created the most expensive edible cake, at the bequest of an unnamed client.
The 54kg, Dh146,920 cake which captures the essence of the Bollywood film Dangal, sees a replica of Aamir Khan standing above a mini scene of his daughters while they practice wrestling. Dangal tells the real life story of amateur wrestler, Mahavir Sing Phogat, who trained his daughters Geeta and Babita to wrestle, resulting in them both winning medals in the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The client, a patron of women's rights, chose the Dangal theme because she felt it was a reflection of people's everyday struggle and India's progression. The cake, apart from its sheer size (it's 122cm high), is so expensive because of the time taken to create it, and the amount of edible gold incorporated into the design.
"The client wanted gold to be generously incorporated into the cake and we fulfilled the request by coating each medal with 75grams of edible gold. It took Broadway Bakery's teams 3.5 weeks and 1,200 man-hours to create this $40,000 work of art," said Head Chef Dominic Joseph Samuel. All the cake artists involved in the creation watched Dangal, so they could gain a fuller understanding of the theme. Indian Independence Day falls on August 15. __________________________ Read more: __________________________
