Cafe Diego, an official link-up with the famed footballer Diego Maradona, is now open at the Nation Galleria mall in Abu Dhabi. The whole space is a riot of colour, from the vintage Volkswagen camper van parked across its frontage to Maradona murals inspired by street art from his home country.
Currently in soft opening, the cafe marked its long-mooted arrival on Wednesday (May 25) with an Argentinian national day celebration that offered taster bites of its multinational menu.
The full menu is cleverly based around food from Maradona’s home country, Argentina, as well as the two countries where he played during his club-football career: Spain (for Barcelona and Sevilla) and Italy (for Napoli).
The soft-opening menu features a variety of soups, salads, cold and hot starters, pizzas, sandwiches, ice cream and even candy floss. Italy is well-represented by the likes of veal dish vitello, the aforementioned pizzas (including the intriguingly named Diego Armando with truffles – one of several dishes named after the footballer) and chicken arrollado with quinoa risotto. Spain brings tapas and paella to the table, while Argentinian touches include the lomito completo sandwich (a popular sirloin steak, egg and sauerkraut combination).
As well as serving food and drinks, the cafe will also be screening live football matches.
