If you’re a fan of sports-themed restaurants and have a penchant for fully loaded burgers, beat a path to downtown Dubai. Located in Liberty House near the DIFC is Original Wings and Rings, an all American diner that has been serving up mega portions and its own selection of signature sauces since 1984. We came, we ate and were defeated by the colossal portions.

King of rings
This restaurant has, without doubt, the biggest onion rings we’ve seen in the Gulf, possibly the world. Sweet and with just the right amount of crunch, the battered beauties were the size of bangles and a surprisingly good, albeit unconventional, standalone starter.
As you might expect, buffalo wings feature prominently on the menu with no less than 14 varieties available. We opted for the boneless chicken variety, having never experienced the novelty before. Succulent, mooreish, with no mess and a side of bleu cheese dip, they were a triumph…not least because there were no sticky fingers in sight.
You also can’t go wrong with the house tortilla chips. You can expect a generous sharing portion and riot of colours from the green pickles, red beef tomatoes, white onion slithers, black olives, yellow melted cheese and dollop of sour cream.
Spoilt for choice
Whether your taste is mesquite, sweet or full-on heat, there’s a huge selection of burgers and homemade sauces to choose from. Our favourites were the classic cheeseburger with Cheddar Jack cheese and the Ringer burger with applewood-smoked trimmings. Standout sauces included classic BBQ, roasted garlic and lemon pepper.
Hot to trot
For those with an iron stomach and will to match, OWR has an ongoing ‘one million hot sauce’ competition. On any given night, brave diners can seek to beat each other in how fast they can eat a portion of super spicy buffalo wings. If the house record is beaten, the winner will receive free wings for an entire year. Be warned, you’ll need to sign a disclaimer before you can attempt the challenge.
Driving it home
When it’s half-time during one of the televised football or rugby games playing on 16 plasmas dotted around the venue, there’s are plenty of other distractions to keep you entertained. For a couple of dirhams a pop, you can pit your driving skills against your pals in the two driving simulator games. Completely addictive and guaranteed to make the mildest mannered driver put their pedal to the metal, children will struggle to get their parents out of the hot seat.
