Trump and the state banquet: who wore what to the royal evening at Buckingham Palace

Donald Trump and family joined the British royals for an extravagant state banquet to mark the end of their first day in the United Kingdom.

The banquet, hosted by the Queen, welcomed 171 guests to Buckingham Palace’s ballroom, including the President and the First Lady, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Trump’s four children, Donald Jnr, Eric, Ivanka and Tiffany were also in attendance, joined by their partners.

A number of other notable guests including Prime Minister Theresa May, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, and Princess Anne also made appearances.

The dress code for the event was white tie – the highest level of formality, reserved only for royals, state or livery ceremonies, balls, banquets or races.

While a white tie dress code does not specify women have to dress in white, the royal family usually don the colour for such occasions, and the First Lady also chose to adhere to this.

Melania chose a custom off-white column dress from Christian Dior's spring '19 couture collection, paired with elbow length white gloves and a sleek up-do.

The Queen was dressed in a white beaded Angela Kelly dress, while the Duchess of Cornwall chose a similarly textured white, three-quarter-length sleeve dress by Bruce Oldfield.

Kate Middleton wore an elegantly ruffled cap sleeve gown by Alexander McQueen, one of her go-to favourite designers, paired with the Lover's Knot tiara and the Queen Mother's sapphire and diamond fringe earrings.

She also joined the other senior royals in sporting a blue sash, marking their roles as members of the Royal Victorian Order. Kate was gifted the honour by the Queen to mark her and William’s eight wedding anniversary earlier this year, and the banquet marked the first time she had worn the honour in public.

Ivanka wore a collared blue floral dress by Carolina Herrera, featuring a wide skirt and tie sleeve details, while Tiffany chose a dark red off-the-shoulder velvet gown, which she teamed with long white gloves.
