There aren’t many bespoke requests that faze Louis Vuitton; this is, after all, a brand that has been hand making luggage and cases for customers since 1854. Today, however, sees the unveiling of a very special project – the French brand was tasked with creating a special carrying case for one of the most famous trophies in the world: the Fifa World Cup.
Standing 36 centimetres tall, weighing an impressive 6.175 g (solid 18k gold is weighty it seems) and sitting on a base of green malachite, the World Cup is utterly unique, with a distinctive look that is famous around the world. To hoist it is arguably the greatest achievement any footballer can aspire to.
Such a trophy requires a case that is up to the task, which is where Louis Vuitton’s master craftsmen come in. Drawing on years of experience, they hand-built this one-off travel piece at the famous Asnières workshop near Paris.
With familiar studded corner protectors, hand stitching and monogram patterning, this is classic Louis Vuitton, except this case is covered not in printed canvas, but laser-engraved Monogram Titanium, a material that is as tough as it is lightweight, to better protect its precious cargo.
Just before the kick-off of the final between France and Croatia later today, Russian model Natalia Vodianova and Fifa legend Philipp Lahm will escort the cup onto the pitch at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.
