The "Green Versace dress of Jennifer Lopez" has its own Wikipedia page, created in the year JLo first wore the slashed-all-over jungle-print dress to the Grammy Awards in 2000. An iteration of the silk-chiffon print is back on the Versace runway for spring / summer 2020, as seen at the Italian brand's show at Milan Fashion Week on Friday, September 20.
First there came hints of that famed palm-frond pattern, on everything from bags, jackets and pool sliders to shirts and skirt suits. The show ended with JLo herself walking to thunderous applause and many a whoop, in a dress inspired directly by "that" dress, looking just as resplendent and confident as she did when she first put it on nearly two decades ago.
Google Images exists because of 'that' dress
As the singer noted in a YouTube series called Moments of Fashion in April 2019: "Probably, my biggest fashion moment ever was wearing the green Versace jungle print dress," the singer said at the beginning of the video. Remembering arriving at the awards, she added: "It was a frenzy ... The [camera] flashes started going in a way that [they don't] usually. There was an extra kinetic energy there.
"Years later I found out that because of that night and because of that dress, Google Images was actually created. So many people went searching for this and they had no way to search a picture at that time on the internet, so they created Google Images," she explains, before joking: "I'm just wondering, where is my cheque?
"It just goes to show you the power of fashion and the power of those types of moments. And I know people try to make it frivolous at times, but what those things do is they give people an inspiration. It puts a beautiful moment out into the world ... one dress can change the trajectory of the way people dress for 10 years." (Or 19, in this case.)
