Emmy red carpet fashion: 15 of the most glorious gowns from recent years

The 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards are set to take place on Sunday night. However, like many ceremonies and events in 2020, this year's event will be a virtual one, which means fashion fans won't be able to feast their eyes on a traditional red carpet.

The ceremony, which celebrates the best of television and its stars, is known for its glitz and glamour.

It's arguably a more playful red carpet than some of of its movie awards ceremony counterparts, and in years gone by, the Emmys red carpet has been all about voluminous statement gowns (see Tracee Ellis Ross in 2018 for a masterclass in exactly that).

Click through the gallery above to see some of the best red carpet looks from the past 16 years.

This year, however, as stars dial in from home to collect their awards, with a rumoured loungewear dress code that befits 2020, we can expect a style ceremony with a difference.

Fashion mavens will have to wait and see if their favourite stars go all-out glamour from the comfort of their own home, adhere to the loungewear guidelines, or top a casual bottom with a glam top as they sign in for a video call ceremony.
