Brit Awards fashion is a conversation point every year, and the 2020 ceremony didn't disappoint. Taking place on Tuesday, February 18, the final day of London Fashion Week, it was an all-out expression of style for many of the stars walking the red carpet.
American singer Billie Eilish paid sartorial tribute to the host country in a head-to-toe Burberry look, while British rapper Stormzy eschewed his much-loved vest and tracksuit bottoms for an all-white Dior look, which he swapped for a black version to perform in. Quick-off-the-mark Twitter commentators have compared his look to Incredibles character, Frozone.

British singer Harry Styles certainly didn't let fans down on the style front. He wore a brown suit by Gucci, with a purple jumper over a shirt with a broderie anglaise collar and pearls. He also wore a black ribbon which was recognised as a tribute to Caroline Flack.
Subjectively, the best dressed stars on the night were Lizzo and Dave. The former wore a Hershey's chocolate-inspired dress by Moschino, a perfectly kitsch nod to Brits fashion of the past, as people are known for having fun with their looks at the British awards ceremony. Rapper Dave, who had a great night winning Album of the Year for Psychodrama, walked the red carpet looking sharp in a teal Louis Vuitton suit.
Dave also used the night to make a statement behind the mic. He criticised British tabloids’ coverage of Meghan Markle and paid tributes to Jack Merritt, the university postgraduate who was killed in the London Bridge terror attack in November.
A political night for the 2020 Brit Awards
The awards this year have been criticised for their lack of female nominees.
In 2018, the nominations were far more evenly balanced, with Dua Lipa and Anne-Marie leading the way in nominations. Neither featured this year.
Pop star and daughter of soul singer Neneh Cherry, Mabel, won Best Female Artist award, while Lizzo stole the show with a blistering performance of Good as Hell.
Stormzy, who became the first black British solo artist to headline Glastonbury Festival last summer, won the Best Male Solo Artist award, beating former One Directioner Harry Styles and Lewis Capaldi.
A controversial winner this year was American hip-hop star Tyler, the Creator, who five years ago was prevented from entering Britain by prime minister Theresa May.
May decried Tyler’s views, saying they “foster hatred with views that seek to provoke others to terrorist acts".
He has been allowed back in the UK since, taking home the 2020 International Male Solo Artist award.
In an event that originally began as a musical tribute to Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee, this year’s Brits were a far cry from the first ceremony.
Politics, diversity and mental health were very much on the agenda.
Comedian Jack Whitehall, who presented the awards, finished with a tribute to Caroline Flack, the Love Island presenter who committed suicide at the weekend.
Whitehall called her “a member of the Brits family” and someone who had “an infectious sense of fun”.
He said she would be "sorely missed" as he tried to hold back the tears.

UN Panel of Experts found regime secretly sold a fifth of the country's gold reserves.
The panel’s 2017 report followed a trail to West Africa where large sums of cash and gold were hidden by Abdullah Al Senussi, Qaddafi’s former intelligence chief, in 2011.
Cases filled with cash that was said to amount to $560m in 100 dollar notes, that was kept by a group of Libyans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
A second stash was said to have been held in Accra, Ghana, inside boxes at the local offices of an international human rights organisation based in France.

Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.

Nigel Farage told Reform's annual conference that the party will proscribe the Muslim Brotherhood if he becomes Prime Minister.
"We will stop dangerous organisations with links to terrorism operating in our country," he said. "Quite why we've been so gutless about this – both Labour and Conservative – I don't know.
“All across the Middle East, countries have banned and proscribed the Muslim Brotherhood as a dangerous organisation. We will do the very same.”
It is 10 years since a ground-breaking report into the Muslim Brotherhood by Sir John Jenkins.
Among the former diplomat's findings was an assessment that “the use of extreme violence in the pursuit of the perfect Islamic society” has “never been institutionally disowned” by the movement.
The prime minister at the time, David Cameron, who commissioned the report, said membership or association with the Muslim Brotherhood was a "possible indicator of extremism" but it would not be banned.

Conflict, drought, famine
Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
Band Aid
Bob Geldof, singer with the Irish rock group The Boomtown Rats, formed Band Aid in response to the horrific images shown in the news broadcasts.
With Midge Ure of the band Ultravox, he wrote the hit charity single Do They Know it’s Christmas in December 1984, featuring a string of high-profile musicians.
Following the single’s success, the idea to stage a rock concert evolved.
Live Aid was a series of simultaneous concerts that took place at Wembley Stadium in London, John F Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia, the US, and at various other venues across the world.
The combined event was broadcast to an estimated worldwide audience of 1.5 billion.
