Handbags and jewellery pieces from Mulberry's autumn/winter 2017 collection are encrusted with zoomed-in images of facial features such as eyes, lips and noses. Bordered by pearls on a pendant, or affixed onto the front of a croc-textured leather handbag, the motifs are likely inspired by Lover's Eyes, a Victorian motif that involved hiding miniature painted eyes into the clothing of loved ones, to serve as protective amulets. The tradition was practised in the 1700s and early 1800s before influencing surrealist fashion accessories.
