Bling bling: Dubai calling

A new tiara features some of Dubai's most notable landmakrs, including the Emirates Towers and the Burj Khalifa, in silver and Swarovski crystals.

If you're not feeling ready for the feathered fascinators or bold enough for a full-brimmed, flower-trimmed hat this Dubai World Cup, there is one more, rather glitzy approach you could take: the tiara. For those with a sense of fun, this could be your ticket to victory in the hugely popular Style Stakes contest on Saturday. Be warned, though - this is not a look for wallflowers and you probably wouldn't want to wear it to the Royal Enclosure. It's also important to avoid looking like you got lost on the way to your wedding, so you'll need to apply a little lateral thinking. Don't wear it with a white dress and a veil, for example; and try not to go for a too-traditional design, or you risk coming across as a modern Miss Havisham.

Michelle Roberts, the designer behind the Dubai jewellery label Jake & Gigi, has come up with just about the most unusual version we've seen in the UAE: the Dubai skyline tiara. Made from solid silver, studded with hundreds of tiny Swarovski crystals, the design features Dubai landmarks such as Jumeirah Emirates Towers and the Burj Al Arab, and uses the stalagmite-like Burj Khalifa as the central peak. The spiky silhouette has a glamorous ice queen feel about it, and one thing is for sure: you're not going to see anyone else wearing it, because there is only one in the world. Which makes it pretty much a perfect fit for Dubai.
