Jamaica through a lens

Photographer Peter Dean Rickards considered himself an “unofficial member of the Jamaican Tourist Board” because of the unique way he portrayed his country. Instead showcasing the lush forests or pristine beaches common in visitor catalogues, Rickards instead took a documentarian approach – capturing moments of chaos, beauty and resilience on the streets of Jamaica, with a specific focus on the characters who inhabit them. The survey exhibition boasts of these moving and sometimes humorous images, offering an extraordinary glimpse into the “yard”, a term for home in patois.
