Omanis returning from overseas travel will no longer have to quarantine in a dedicated centre, such as a hotel or authorised company site, the government said on Tuesday.

The Supreme Committee on Covid-19 "has decided to exempt Omanis arriving in the sultanate through land, sea or air borders from mandatory institutional quarantine, but to undergo a home-based isolation, together with all other procedures imposed on all arrivals", the government said.

"Consequently, they will not need to provide proof of a hotel booking for seven nights, or a guarantee letter that specifies details of the arrangements being made in accordance with the institutional quarantine requirements."

The decision came into effect on Monday.

On Sunday, the Omani government introduced tough new measures to control a wave of Covid-19 cases.

They included bans on all evening gatherings during Ramadan, and on foreign visitors other than citizens and residents, the latter being effective from noon on April 8.

On Tuesday, Oman's Health Ministry announced 1,208 new Covid-19 cases, taking the total to 165,482.

The ministry said the number of recoveries reached 148,303 after 764 more patients were cleared, the Oman News Agency reported.

The ministry also announced six Covid-related fatalities, taking the death toll to 1,728.

It said 94 patients were admitted to hospital over the past 24 hours. Oman now has 623 patients in hospital, of whom 196 are in intensive care.
