The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised UAE citizens not to travel to Thailand due to ongoing political unrest in the country.

Emirati citizens are being cautioned against all non-essential travel to Thailand for the time being.

“The ministry is closely following developments in Thailand and has assigned, in coordination with the UAE embassy in the country, an operations room that works around the clock in order to follow citizens’ conditions there,” said Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Hamed, undersecretary of the ministry.

He also urged Emiratis in Thailand to avoid gatherings and demonstrations, adding that they should coordinate with the embassy.

Anti-government protests started in the Southeast Asian kingdom last November, after an amnesty bill was proposed that would pardon those involved in wrongdoings since 2004 under the influence of the former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and a proposed amendment to the 2007 constitution.

Protesters forced the closure of several public offices after forcing their way inside the buildings.

The unrest led to a 60-day state of emergency on January 21.

Mr Al Hamed called on all UAE citizens to comply fully with warnings until further notice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, adding that citizens should take care when travelling abroad.
