ABU DHABI // A host of infrastructure projects, including extending the Dubai Metro to the Expo 2020 site and expanding surrounding roads, have been given the go-ahead by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.

Sheikh Mohammed approved the projects, which also included work on the Bluewaters Island and Deira Islands Canal developments, as part of preparations for Expo 2020 during a visit to the Roads and Transport Authority on Wednesday.

Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer, RTA Director, briefed Sheikh Mohammed on the projects designed to deal with increased passenger traffic, projected to reach 95 million at its peak.

This will be achieved by the introduction of the Metro’s new Route 2020 line – which will pass through Discovery Gardens, Furjan, Jumeirah Golf Estates and Dubai Investments Park before connecting to the Expo site – as well as the expansion of nearby Airport Road, Al Yalayis Road, the Gardens Parallel Road and University City Road.

Sheikh Mohammed also approved the designs of a number of Metro stations for Route 2020 including an wing-shaped station.

He said he was pleased with the progress achieved on the projects and praised Mr Al Tayer and other members of the RTA executive board.

Sheikh Mohammed also applauded the efforts of all the RTA staff including engineers, technicians and administrative staff, reported WAM, the state news agency.
