DUBAI // An Indian family who were looking to buy jewelry to celebrate their son’s engagement struck the big time when they won 1kg of gold in a raffle.

The family, who were visiting from Andhra Pradesh and shopping for gifts. They spotted a Dubai Shopping Festival raffle box, and submitted the name of their son, 25-year-old Sreedhar.

The engineer, who arrived in Dubai eight months ago, said it earned him brownie points with his fiance when he called her to share the good news.

Shoppers can enter the daily raffle if they spend Dh500 on gold jewelry. If they spend the same amount or more on diamonds, pearls and watches, they receive two raffle coupons.

The promotion will run until February 2.
