Canada has thrown its support behind Dubai's bid to host World Expo 2020.

The announcement was made at a meeting between Arif Lalani, the Canadian ambassador, and Reem Al Hashemi, Minister of State and managing director of the higher committee for hosting World Expo 2020.

Canada’s support was based on the strength of Dubai’s proposal, the state news agency Wam reported.

“Canada believes it is time for the Middle East to host the world at a time of such hope and challenge in the region,” said John Baird, Canada’s foreign minister.

“Dubai is best placed to bring together the most diverse group of peoples from around the world to share ideas, aspirations and concrete solutions for the future.”

Ed Fast, Canada’s minister of international trade, said the UAE had made huge strides since its formation more than four decades ago.

Mr Fast said it had an open and secure society, and Canadian businesses were eager to build stronger trade and investment ties with the UAE.

“By supporting Dubai Expo 2020 we are showing our UAE partners that Canada is committed to taking our relationship to new heights that will create new opportunities for people in both countries,” he said.

Sultan Al Mansouri, Minister of Economy, said Canada's support was evidence of the countries' strengthening relationship.

There are more than 100 major Canadian companies in the UAE, and about 40,000 Canadian expatriates.
