Anantara is set to open two resorts in Oman this year as the Thai luxury hotels group expands its regional presence.
Al Baleed Salalah Resort by Anantara is scheduled to open in August while the Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort is expected in the middle of this year.
Located 2,000 metres above sea level on the rim of a canyon, Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar would be the highest five-star resort in the Middle East, according to the company. The US hotel operator Starwood expects to open The Westin Muscat early next year with Aloft Muscat and Element Muscat in the first quarter of 2018. A W Muscat is expected in 2019.
Dubai’s Jumeirah Group expects to open two hotels at the Saraya Bandar Jissah complex next year with one comprising 206 rooms and the other 106 rooms.
It will be located near Qantab, between Hajjar mountains and the Gulf of Oman.
Hotel demand in Oman is likely to face some pressure this year on the back of tougher economic conditions triggered by the crash in oil prices, according to to Rashid Aboobacker, the associate director of TRI Consulting in Dubai.
“We believe that hotel occupancies are likely to hold up as many regional tourists are likely to cut down on travel to more expensive destinations outside the region, and travel more within the region but average rates are likely to decline as hotels are forced to offer more cost-effective packages to woo visitors from the local markets to maintain demand,” he said.
The Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar complex would also have 33 one-, two- or three-bedroom villas and six restaurants.
Al Baleed Salalah Resort would have 40 rooms besides 88 one-, two- and three-bedroom villas and three food and beverage outlets.

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.

Hili 2: Unesco World Heritage site
The site is part of the Hili archaeological park in Al Ain. Excavations there have proved the existence of the earliest known agricultural communities in modern-day UAE. Some date to the Bronze Age but Hili 2 is an Iron Age site. The Iron Age witnessed the development of the falaj, a network of channels that funnelled water from natural springs in the area. Wells allowed settlements to be established, but falaj meant they could grow and thrive. Unesco, the UN's cultural body, awarded Al Ain's sites - including Hili 2 - world heritage status in 2011. Now the most recent dig at the site has revealed even more about the skilled people that lived and worked there.
