ABU DHABI // A 200km endurance race is to take place in the deserts of Liwa for the first time in February, and organisers hope that it will become an annual event.
The inaugural Liwa Challenge Master Trek will be held between February 7 and 15 and is attracting international athletes including entrants from Europe, the United States, Canada and New Zealand, as well as UAE.
Runners will traverse the desert, carrying with them supplies, including water, food and equipment. They will carry their own GPS systems to help them navigate a series of checkpoints, keeping an eye out for beacons and way points.
The race, with runners deciding on a 100km or 200km course, will finish at the top of the 100-metre Tel Mareeb, one of the highest dunes in the Rub Al Khali.
