ABU DHABI // They were first to finish on Day One and continued to lead the pack of solar-powered race cars for most of the 325-kilometre course on the second day of the Abu Dhabi Solar Challenge.
Then, just 200 metres from the finish line, the host emirate’s Petroleum Institute team was relegated to a second-place finish as Istanbul’s Team Socrat won the second leg of the 1,200km race on Saturday.
“We drove well today, and are pleased with our first position,” said Serdar Zurnaci, Team Socrat’s driver.
“The roads were often tricky, with city and desert driving. We still have a way to go but we have a good shot at winning. We have worked extremely hard for this.”
Crossing the line first in the challenge does not necessarily guarantee a stage victory, because any penalties incurred during the race, such as exceeding the speed limit, for example, can add to a race team’s final finish time, which will be posted this morning.
Sidd Bikkannavar, 33, an American driver for the Petroleum Institute team, said they were not too rattled by their second-place finish.
“We have our eyes on the big prize, which is the overall winner. Whatever happens on any one particular day will not change our strategy,” he said.
“Anytime we see a team coming up behind us or trying to overtake us we don’t change what we’re doing and adjust our speed or anything. We have a strategy.”
The team that finishes the three-day race with the best time overall will be declared the winner.
Fifteen international teams are competing in the competition, the first such event to be held in the Middle East under the aegis of the International Solarcar Federation.
It is sponsored by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and hosted by renewable energy company Masdar, as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
The public is invited to visit all stopovers on the final day of the challenge on Sunday for a chance to meet the teams and see the cars up close.
The stopover points will be at 8.30am at Zayed Sports City’s multipurpose arena and 10am at the World Future Energy Summit at Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Centre.

The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.
It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.
The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.
The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.

Iran's dirty tricks to dodge sanctions
There’s increased scrutiny on the tricks being used to keep commodities flowing to and from blacklisted countries. Here’s a description of how some work.
1 Going Dark
A common method to transport Iranian oil with stealth is to turn off the Automatic Identification System, an electronic device that pinpoints a ship’s location. Known as going dark, a vessel flicks the switch before berthing and typically reappears days later, masking the location of its load or discharge port.
2. Ship-to-Ship Transfers
A first vessel will take its clandestine cargo away from the country in question before transferring it to a waiting ship, all of this happening out of sight. The vessels will then sail in different directions. For about a third of Iranian exports, more than one tanker typically handles a load before it’s delivered to its final destination, analysts say.
3. Fake Destinations
Signaling the wrong destination to load or unload is another technique. Ships that intend to take cargo from Iran may indicate their loading ports in sanction-free places like Iraq. Ships can keep changing their destinations and end up not berthing at any of them.
4. Rebranded Barrels
Iranian barrels can also be rebranded as oil from a nation free from sanctions such as Iraq. The countries share fields along their border and the crude has similar characteristics. Oil from these deposits can be trucked out to another port and documents forged to hide Iran as the origin.

What is Reform?
Reform is a right-wing, populist party led by Nigel Farage, a former MEP who won a seat in the House of Commons last year at his eighth attempt and a prominent figure in the campaign for the UK to leave the European Union.

Two-step truce
The UN-brokered ceasefire deal for Hodeidah will be implemented in two stages, with the first to be completed before the New Year begins, according to the Arab Coalition supporting the Yemeni government.
By midnight on December 31, the Houthi rebels will have to withdraw from the ports of Hodeidah, Ras Issa and Al Saqef, coalition officials told The National.
The second stage will be the complete withdrawal of all pro-government forces and rebels from Hodeidah city, to be completed by midnight on January 7.
The process is to be overseen by a Redeployment Co-ordination Committee (RCC) comprising UN monitors and representatives of the government and the rebels.
The agreement also calls the deployment of UN-supervised neutral forces in the city and the establishment of humanitarian corridors to ensure distribution of aid across the country.

How to keep control of your emotions
If your investment decisions are being dictated by emotions such as fear, greed, hope, frustration and boredom, it is time for a rethink, Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at online trading platform IG, says.
Greed
Greedy investors trade beyond their means, open more positions than usual or hold on to positions too long to chase an even greater gain. “All too often, they incur a heavy loss and may even wipe out the profit already made.
Tip: Ignore the short-term hype, noise and froth and invest for the long-term plan, based on sound fundamentals.
Fear
The risk of making a loss can cloud decision-making. “This can cause you to close out a position too early, or miss out on a profit by being too afraid to open a trade,” he says.
Tip: Start with a plan, and stick to it. For added security, consider placing stops to reduce any losses and limits to lock in profits.
Hope
While all traders need hope to start trading, excessive optimism can backfire. Too many traders hold on to a losing trade because they believe that it will reverse its trend and become profitable.
Tip: Set realistic goals. Be happy with what you have earned, rather than frustrated by what you could have earned.
Frustration
Traders can get annoyed when the markets have behaved in unexpected ways and generates losses or fails to deliver anticipated gains.
Tip: Accept in advance that asset price movements are completely unpredictable and you will suffer losses at some point. These can be managed, say, by attaching stops and limits to your trades.
Boredom
Too many investors buy and sell because they want something to do. They are trading as entertainment, rather than in the hope of making money. As well as making bad decisions, the extra dealing charges eat into returns.
