Vince McCulloch likes riding in the pack. The general manager of the industrial fan manufacturer and supplier Howden Middle East in Dubai has been a member of the Harley-Davidson owners' group in the city since he landed three years ago. Mr McCulloch, 50, who is from the United Kingdom, talks about his passion for riding Harley motorbikes.
Why take up this hobby?
The best way to de-stress and relax is to ride a motorbike. And also to have a bit of fun. I used to ride a sports bike in the United Kingdom but bought my first Harley-Davidson when I came to Dubai three years ago. I recently sold my first one and bought another - Road King Classic, which is slightly bigger than the first one. And I will continue to ride a Harley after I leave Dubai. It is very difficult to leave.
How popular are the Harley-Davidson riding clubs in this region?
The Dubai chapter of the Harley-Davidson owners' group that I belong to has 300 members. There are many small private, independent riding groups in the Middle East and most of them are in Dubai.
That is because of the large expat population here. I ride with [my club] because I know the people and I am comfortable riding with them because I know their style of riding. The groups are predominantly men but there are more women taking up riding.
How often do you ride?
I try to ride twice a week, and always on a Friday. During summer, I set off very early in the morning, before dawn, and ride for four to five hours. During winter, I ride for around seven hours.
What is your favourite riding route?
Hatta and Oman. We always ride on the highways. Absolutely not off roads.
How expensive is this hobby?
Very expensive. You need to get the bike serviced every 5,000 kilometres because of the heat and you have to spend Dh1,500 [US$408] to Dh2,000 depending on the servicing. And everybody customises their bikes. I have already made some changes to the exhaust system to enhance the bike, the handlebars, the seats, and a bit of chrome here and there.
How many people do you ride with and what are the safety measures you follow?
I usually ride with 30 to almost 70 bikers during winter, and around 10 in summer. We have a road marshal and before every ride, the road marshal briefs the group on the route and recaps the rules of riding in a pack, such as how to maintain formation and be aware of what is going on around you.
How does this hobby contribute to your work life?
Riding a motorcycle is the best way to meet people. When I came to Dubai, many of my colleagues rode a Harley-Davidson.

Powdered coffee creamer, microwave popcorn and virtually anything processed with a crust is likely to contain it, as this guide from Mayo Clinic outlines:

How Filipinos in the UAE invest
A recent survey of 10,000 Filipino expatriates in the UAE found that 82 per cent have plans to invest, primarily in property. This is significantly higher than the 2014 poll showing only two out of 10 Filipinos planned to invest.
Fifty-five percent said they plan to invest in property, according to the poll conducted by the New Perspective Media Group, organiser of the Philippine Property and Investment Exhibition. Acquiring a franchised business or starting up a small business was preferred by 25 per cent and 15 per cent said they will invest in mutual funds. The rest said they are keen to invest in insurance (3 per cent) and gold (2 per cent).
Of the 5,500 respondents who preferred property as their primary investment, 54 per cent said they plan to make the purchase within the next year. Manila was the top location, preferred by 53 per cent.

Mercer, the investment consulting arm of US services company Marsh & McLennan, expects its wealth division to at least double its assets under management (AUM) in the Middle East as wealth in the region continues to grow despite economic headwinds, a company official said.
Mercer Wealth, which globally has $160 billion in AUM, plans to boost its AUM in the region to $2-$3bn in the next 2-3 years from the present $1bn, said Yasir AbuShaban, a Dubai-based principal with Mercer Wealth.
“Within the next two to three years, we are looking at reaching $2 to $3 billion as a conservative estimate and we do see an opportunity to do so,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Mercer does not directly make investments, but allocates clients’ money they have discretion to, to professional asset managers. They also provide advice to clients.
“We have buying power. We can negotiate on their (client’s) behalf with asset managers to provide them lower fees than they otherwise would have to get on their own,” he added.
Mercer Wealth’s clients include sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and insurance companies among others.
From its office in Dubai, Mercer also looks after Africa, India and Turkey, where they also see opportunity for growth.
Wealth creation in Middle East and Africa (MEA) grew 8.5 per cent to $8.1 trillion last year from $7.5tn in 2015, higher than last year’s global average of 6 per cent and the second-highest growth in a region after Asia-Pacific which grew 9.9 per cent, according to consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). In the region, where wealth grew just 1.9 per cent in 2015 compared with 2014, a pickup in oil prices has helped in wealth generation.
BCG is forecasting MEA wealth will rise to $12tn by 2021, growing at an annual average of 8 per cent.
Drivers of wealth generation in the region will be split evenly between new wealth creation and growth of performance of existing assets, according to BCG.
Another general trend in the region is clients’ looking for a comprehensive approach to investing, according to Mr AbuShaban.
“Institutional investors or some of the families are seeing a slowdown in the available capital they have to invest and in that sense they are looking at optimizing the way they manage their portfolios and making sure they are not investing haphazardly and different parts of their investment are working together,” said Mr AbuShaban.
Some clients also have a higher appetite for risk, given the low interest-rate environment that does not provide enough yield for some institutional investors. These clients are keen to invest in illiquid assets, such as private equity and infrastructure.
“What we have seen is a desire for higher returns in what has been a low-return environment specifically in various fixed income or bonds,” he said.
“In this environment, we have seen a de facto increase in the risk that clients are taking in things like illiquid investments, private equity investments, infrastructure and private debt, those kind of investments were higher illiquidity results in incrementally higher returns.”
The Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, one of the largest sovereign wealth funds, said in its 2016 report that has gradually increased its exposure in direct private equity and private credit transactions, mainly in Asian markets and especially in China and India. The authority’s private equity department focused on structured equities owing to “their defensive characteristics.”
