Homes damaged in quake to be replaced

Ras al Khaimah // Houses in the Northern Emirates damaged by a 5.1 earthquake in 2002 are to be replaced as part of a Dh143 million project.

More than 98 villas have already been built, and a further 70 houses have been repaired as part of the scheme, according to the state news agency WAM.

The Infrastructure Development Commission said yesterday that 138 villas would be built for Emiratis in Ras al Khaimah and Fujairah,including the rebuilding of those damaged in the earthquake nine years ago.

Ninety-four villas will be built in the Al Hamra district in RAK as well as 44 houses in Dafta, Al Mareer, Masafi, Al Bathnah and Sidr valley.

The Abdullah Umran Hospital in RAK will also be completed at a cost of Dh90 million, according to the commission.

The construction plans of numerous housing compounds were also reviewed, including the Kalba area, which includes 100 houses, and the residential compound in Al Qoor valley, which houses 61 units.

Many officials attended the meeting, including the deputy minister of presidential affairs, the chairman of the commission and the vice minister of presidential affairs.
