McDonald’s to roll out table service at hundreds of UK restaurants

The world’s biggest hamburger chain, McDonald’s, is to introduce table service to 400 restaurants in the United Kingdom.

The popular fast food company is aiming to modernise and attract more families by revamping the restaurants with table service and gourmet burgers, The Guardian reported. A successful table service trial was carried out last year.

The changes come as McDonald’s reported its biggest sales in the UK for the fourth quarter, and last night stated its second straight quarter of domestic growth in the United States.

Sales at the world’s biggest hamburger chain rose 5.7 per cent in the US for the final three months of 2015, boosted by unseasonably warm weather and the launch of an all-day breakfast menu in October.

McDonald’s, which has more than 36,000 locations around the world, is working to turn around its business under chief executive Steve Easterbrook, who will mark one year on the job in March.

The launch of all-day breakfast has been one of the company’s most high-profile maneuvers under Mr Easterbrook. The decision to make select items like the Egg McMuffin available around the clock generated a surge of media coverage. Fans of McDonald’s breakfast had long complained of being unable satisfy their cravings later in the day.

In the UAE, the company has faced growing competition from the increasing number of gourmet burger brands, such as Shake Shack, Burger Bureau and Fuddruckers.

McDonald’s is yet to disclose whether it will be rolling out table service in other countries.

Conflict, drought, famine

Estimates of the number of deaths caused by the famine range from 400,000 to 1 million, according to a document prepared for the UK House of Lords in 2024.
It has been claimed that the policies of the Ethiopian government, which took control after deposing Emperor Haile Selassie in a military-led revolution in 1974, contributed to the scale of the famine.
Dr Miriam Bradley, senior lecturer in humanitarian studies at the University of Manchester, has argued that, by the early 1980s, “several government policies combined to cause, rather than prevent, a famine which lasted from 1983 to 1985. Mengistu’s government imposed Stalinist-model agricultural policies involving forced collectivisation and villagisation [relocation of communities into planned villages].
The West became aware of the catastrophe through a series of BBC News reports by journalist Michael Buerk in October 1984 describing a “biblical famine” and containing graphic images of thousands of people, including children, facing starvation.
