Middle East passenger traffic through London Heathrow surged in August as the big Arabian Gulf carriers added larger planes and boosted capacity.

Passenger numbers increased 9.1 per cent to the Middle East year-on-year as the airport handled 7.34 million passengers during the month.

Carriers including Emirates and Oman Air have boosted capacity into the airport while the greater use of the A380 double decker plane helped to drive passenger growth.

Heathrow’s figures come after Dubai International Airport, the world’s busiest for international travel, said that passenger traffic increased by 14 per cent from a year earlier to a monthly record of 7.62 million people in July.
