Etihad Airways is planning to launch flights to Brazil, marking the airline's first destination in South America.
Daily direct flights to Sao Paulo are to start next June, the carrier announced yesterday. This is the latest in a series of commercial links that have been forged between the UAE and Latin America.
"Business and tourism flows between the United Arab Emirates and Brazil have been growing," said James Hogan, the president and chief executive of Etihad Airways.
In March, Mubadala Development struck a US$2 billion (Dh7.34bn) investment deal with Brazil's EBX Group, a company with interests in oil and gas, gold and other sectors. Mubadala, a strategic investment company owned by the Abu Dhabi Government, took a 5.6 per cent stake in Centennial Asset Brazilian Equity Fund and other offshore holding companies owned by Eike Batista, the founder of EBX Group.
DP World, three years ago, signed a deal with Odebrecht to acquire a majority stake in Embraport, a $500 million port terminal under development next to Porto de Santos, which is Brazil's largest container terminal and located about 80km from Sao Paulo. DP World also operates a terminal in the port in Callao, which is about 15km from Lima, Peru.
Emirates Airline launched flights to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and Argentina's capital, Buenos Aires, at the beginning of this year. The carrier, based in Dubai, also operates flights to Sao Paulo.
The Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing has said it is planning to open an office in South America, a growing feeder market of tourists to the UAE. Sao Paulo is one of the locations under consideration for the office.
"Brazil is the world's sixth-largest economy, having overtaken the UK in 2011," Etihad said. "It is the largest country in South America and has the biggest population, at almost 200 million. Its trade and tourism will be boosted by its hosting of both the Fifa World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016."
Brazil is the UAE's fourth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade between the two countries valued at $2.85bn, Etihad said. It added that authorities hope to increase this to $10bn within five years.
"We are witnessing significant growth in the bilateral relations between Brazil and the UAE and we are certain that Etihad Airways flights will create new opportunities for government, trade, tourism and cultural exchanges," said João de Mendonça Lima Neto, Brazil's ambassador to the UAE.
Exports from Brazil to the UAE include sugar, soya beans, meat, aircraft, heavy oils, tractors and construction vehicles.
Oil rigs, aviation fuel, steel, aluminium goods and plastics are among exports from the UAE to Brazil.
"The fact that these services are a year away means the carrier has time to market the new connections to Sao Paulo," said Saj Ahmad, the chief analyst at StrategicAero Research.
"It also effectively pits Etihad directly against … Emirates, who also serve Sao Paulo, so customers will certainly benefit from better connections to and from the UAE to Brazil, although whether there will be any significant price decreases remains to be seen," Mr Ahmad said.

How will Gen Alpha invest?
Mark Chahwan, co-founder and chief executive of robo-advisory firm Sarwa, forecasts that Generation Alpha (born between 2010 and 2024) will start investing in their teenage years and therefore benefit from compound interest.
“Technology and education should be the main drivers to make this happen, whether it’s investing in a few clicks or their schools/parents stepping up their personal finance education skills,” he adds.
Mr Chahwan says younger generations have a higher capacity to take on risk, but for some their appetite can be more cautious because they are investing for the first time. “Schools still do not teach personal finance and stock market investing, so a lot of the learning journey can feel daunting and intimidating,” he says.
He advises millennials to not always start with an aggressive portfolio even if they can afford to take risks. “We always advise to work your way up to your risk capacity, that way you experience volatility and get used to it. Given the higher risk capacity for the younger generations, stocks are a favourite,” says Mr Chahwan.
Highlighting the role technology has played in encouraging millennials and Gen Z to invest, he says: “They were often excluded, but with lower account minimums ... a customer with $1,000 [Dh3,672] in their account has their money working for them just as hard as the portfolio of a high get-worth individual.”

His life in brief: Born in a village near Galilee, he lived in exile for most of his life and started writing poetry after high school. He was arrested several times by Israel for what were deemed to be inciteful poems. Most of his work focused on the love and yearning for his homeland, and he was regarded the Palestinian poet of resistance. Over the course of his life, he published more than 30 poetry collections and books of prose, with his work translated into more than 20 languages. Many of his poems were set to music by Arab composers, most significantly Marcel Khalife. Darwish died on August 9, 2008 after undergoing heart surgery in the United States. He was later buried in Ramallah where a shrine was erected in his honour.
Citizenship-by-investment programmes
United Kingdom
The UK offers three programmes for residency. The UK Overseas Business Representative Visa lets you open an overseas branch office of your existing company in the country at no extra investment. For the UK Tier 1 Innovator Visa, you are required to invest £50,000 (Dh238,000) into a business. You can also get a UK Tier 1 Investor Visa if you invest £2 million, £5m or £10m (the higher the investment, the sooner you obtain your permanent residency).
All UK residency visas get approved in 90 to 120 days and are valid for 3 years. After 3 years, the applicant can apply for extension of another 2 years. Once they have lived in the UK for a minimum of 6 months every year, they are eligible to apply for permanent residency (called Indefinite Leave to Remain). After one year of ILR, the applicant can apply for UK passport.
The Caribbean
Depending on the country, the investment amount starts from $100,000 (Dh367,250) and can go up to $400,000 in real estate. From the date of purchase, it will take between four to five months to receive a passport.
Portugal
The investment amount ranges from €350,000 to €500,000 (Dh1.5m to Dh2.16m) in real estate. From the date of purchase, it will take a maximum of six months to receive a Golden Visa. Applicants can apply for permanent residency after five years and Portuguese citizenship after six years.
“Among European countries with residency programmes, Portugal has been the most popular because it offers the most cost-effective programme to eventually acquire citizenship of the European Union without ever residing in Portugal,” states Veronica Cotdemiey of Citizenship Invest.
Greece
The real estate investment threshold to acquire residency for Greece is €250,000, making it the cheapest real estate residency visa scheme in Europe. You can apply for residency in four months and citizenship after seven years.
Spain
The real estate investment threshold to acquire residency for Spain is €500,000. You can apply for permanent residency after five years and citizenship after 10 years. It is not necessary to live in Spain to retain and renew the residency visa permit.
Cyprus
Cyprus offers the quickest route to citizenship of a European country in only six months. An investment of €2m in real estate is required, making it the highest priced programme in Europe.
Malta
The Malta citizenship by investment programme is lengthy and investors are required to contribute sums as donations to the Maltese government. The applicant must either contribute at least €650,000 to the National Development & Social Fund. Spouses and children are required to contribute €25,000; unmarried children between 18 and 25 and dependent parents must contribute €50,000 each.
The second step is to make an investment in property of at least €350,000 or enter a property rental contract for at least €16,000 per annum for five years. The third step is to invest at least €150,000 in bonds or shares approved by the Maltese government to be kept for at least five years.
Candidates must commit to a minimum physical presence in Malta before citizenship is granted. While you get residency in two months, you can apply for citizenship after a year.
Egypt
A one-year residency permit can be bought if you purchase property in Egypt worth $100,000. A three-year residency is available for those who invest $200,000 in property, and five years for those who purchase property worth $400,000.

Uefa Nations League: How it Works
The Uefa Nations League, introduced last year, has reached its final stage, to be played over five days in northern Portugal. The format of its closing tournament is compact, spread over two semi-finals, with the first, Portugal versus Switzerland in Porto on Wednesday evening, and the second, England against the Netherlands, in Guimaraes, on Thursday.
