The National received two awards from the Dubai Economic Council (DEC) yesterday at a ceremony recognising the media's role in supporting economic policymaking in the emirate.

The DEC provides the Government of Dubai with policy recommendations and research. It also links up both the private and public sectors on matters of economic strategy.

Mohammed Al Otaiba, The National's editor-in-chief, was recognised for the newspaper's editorial support and assistance in helping the DEC reach decision-makers in the business community.

Hani Al Hamli, the secretary general of the DEC, presented the award.

"The National hires all the best people," Mr Al Hamli said.

Representatives from Al Ittihad, The National's Arabic sister newspaper, received two awards, as did Gulf News, Khaleej Times, Gulf Today, ITP Media, The Economist Group and The Financial Times.

The ceremony was held in the Burj Al Arab hotel.

This month the DEC hosted the Japan Electronics Technology Forum for Sustainable Development in Dubai with the Jebel Ali Free Zone Authority and Dubai Airport Freezone Authority, promoting collaboration between UAE and Japanese enterprises.

Japanese technology companies demonstrated the latest developments taking place in the environment, health and security sectors.
