A woman alone in solitary prayer, with her head bowed and only her hands visible.
The striking image is one of five winning photographs of the monthly instagram competition hosted by the Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA). The theme for June’s competition was “Prayer”.
Jehad Faisal Ghazwan, from Bahrain, took the image of the praying woman – who happens to be his younger sister – at home. He expressed his delight at winning: “Winning in this contest means a lot to me, because I have represented myself and my country to the rest of the world through this great photography organisation [HIPA].”
Other captivating images include a throng of worshippers dockside in a port in Indonesia, taken by Indonesian Hendra Permana. The photograph was shot at Sunda Kelapa Harbour in Jakarta. Permana said she was happy to win the competition, because it means she can visit Dubai and be recognised as an international professional photographer.
The five winners will receive the HIPA Recognition Award after their photographs are published on the official HIPA Instagram account @HIPAae.
