Old Navy today opens its first UAE store in Dubai's Festival City with a one-day-only discount of up to 30 per cent on merchandise. Stefan Laban, senior vice president of strategic alliances at Gap Inc, the multinational owner of Old Navy, talked to The National about the popularity of the American apparel and accessories retailer, and its promise to afford customers a fun in-store experience.
When did plans for Middle East expansion begin?
We announced our plans to take Old Navy to the Middle East in October last year. Since then, we have opened stores in Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, and now the UAE. We’re excited to bring Old Navy’s current American fashion essentials to the UAE and Dubai specifically.
Do you expect footfall to mostly be made up of expatriates familiar with the brand, or Emiratis and Arabs?
Everyone is welcome and we don’t define our customer by a particular demographic. We are a brand that serves the whole family and we believe that style should be accessible to everyone. We expect to have the same stylish customer who wants a great deal as in the United States, and our other global markets.
Which seasonal pieces would you earmark as potential bestsellers in the UAE?
Our Trailblazer collection, which has a folk-inspired mood for autumn and focuses on hand-crafted detailing and exaggerated textures. Faux-wool and fleece ponchos in tartans and Aztec prints, paired with cable-knit dresses and sweaters, invoke a sophisticated urban woman with strong country roots. We’re also proud of our best-selling basics, such as our Rockstar denim. It’s the universal skinny jean, offering the perfect fit for every body, and available in a range of classic washes and seasonal colours.
What key characteristics of the Old Navy brand will appeal most to UAE shoppers?
Old Navy is an iconic American brand and we believe that style should be accessible to everyone. We’re focused on creating great, on-trend, high-quality products for the whole family at incredible value. We’re also striving for a fun, unique store experience.
Will Old Navy’s prices in Dubai be the same or higher when converted from US dollars into UAE dirhams?
Old Navy is a ‘value player’ in the US and internationally. We work with our franchise partners to price similarly to the US, adjusting pricing based on the market and local competition.
Will online shopping and delivery services become available soon, too?
We have no plans at this time for e-commerce or delivery services, but we are always looking at future opportunities.
Are there plans to open Old Navy stores throughout the UAE?
There is no announcement at this time. However, we are encouraged by the response to Old Navy internationally and will evaluate other opportunities as we move forward.

- Be professional and patient. Always be professional with whoever you are interacting with throughout your search process, this will be remembered. You need to be patient, dedicated and not give up on your search. Candidates need to make sure they are following up appropriately for roles they have applied.

Who was Alfred Nobel?
The Nobel Prize was created by wealthy Swedish chemist and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel.
- In his will he dictated that the bulk of his estate should be used to fund "prizes to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind".
- Nobel is best known as the inventor of dynamite, but also wrote poetry and drama and could speak Russian, French, English and German by the age of 17. The five original prize categories reflect the interests closest to his heart.

- Jebel Akhdar is a two-hour drive from Muscat airport or a six-hour drive from Dubai. It’s impossible to visit by car unless you have a 4x4. Phone ahead to the hotel to arrange a transfer.
- If you’re driving, make sure your insurance covers Oman.
- By air: Budget airlines Air Arabia, Flydubai and SalamAir offer direct routes to Muscat from the UAE.
- Tourists from the Emirates (UAE nationals not included) must apply for an Omani visa online before arrival at evisa.rop.gov.om. The process typically takes several days.
- Flash floods are probable due to the terrain and a lack of drainage. Always check the weather before venturing into any canyons or other remote areas and identify a plan of escape that includes high ground, shelter and parking where your car won’t be overtaken by sudden downpours.

- A new “core protection” for refugees moving from permanent to a more basic, temporary protection

The flights
Direct flights from the UAE to the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, are available with Air Arabia, (www.airarabia.com) Fly Dubai (www.flydubai.com) or Etihad (www.etihad.com) from Dh1,200 return including taxes. The trek described here started from Jomson, but there are many other start and end point variations depending on how you tailor your trek. To get to Jomson from Kathmandu you must first fly to the lake-side resort town of Pokhara with either Buddha Air (www.buddhaair.com) or Yeti Airlines (www.yetiairlines.com). Both charge around US$240 (Dh880) return. From Pokhara there are early morning flights to Jomson with Yeti Airlines or Simrik Airlines (www.simrikairlines.com) for around US$220 (Dh800) return.
The trek
Restricted area permits (US$500 per person) are required for trekking in the Upper Mustang area. The challenging Meso Kanto pass between Tilcho Lake and Jomson should not be attempted by those without a lot of mountain experience and a good support team. An excellent trekking company with good knowledge of Upper Mustang, the Annaurpuna Circuit and Tilcho Lake area and who can help organise a version of the trek described here is the Nepal-UK run Snow Cat Travel (www.snowcattravel.com).
