Lovers of Indian and Pakistani music are in for a treat tomorrow with a choice of two concerts featuring the best of qawwali and Sufi music.
Abida Parveen and Muhammed Ali
One of Pakistan’s most prominent Sufi singers, Abida Parveen will showcase her vocal prowess in a range of traditional-music genres, including ghazals and kaafis.
She is performing as part of the Wahdaniyat concert at the Jumeirah Emirates Towers, headlining a bill alongside fellow Pakistani singer Muhammed Ali, frontman of Sufi music’s most popular ensemble, Suroor.
Parveen, 62, says the UAE crowds always make her feel at home.
“I love coming to Dubai to perform,” she says. “I have always held my audience in the highest esteem, and I can safely say that the excitement my fans are feeling at the thought of my performance in Dubai, I am feeling way more than that. I am looking forward to this performance a lot.”
Parveen is considered a living legend given her four decades of excellence, and is a recipient of Hilal-i-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s second-highest civilian award.
She sings in Urdu, Sindhi, Saraiki, Punjabi and Persian and performs globally. She is also a regular on Coke Studio, Pakistan's hugely popular music-fusion television show. Fans can expect to hear some of her biggest hits tomorrow, including include Soz-e-Ishq and Ramooz-e-Ishq, from season 3, and Chaap Tilak, her season 7 collaboration with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan
Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is also performing in Dubai on Friday (September 16), at the World Trade Centre. As one of the region’s biggest crossover musical stars, Khan has found success as a Qawwal and Sufi singer, in addition to appealing to modern audiences as a Bollywood playback singer.
The nephew of the legendary Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Rahat started training as a singer at the age of 7, first performed publicly at 9, and was part of his uncle’s qawwali troupe and began touring the world by 15.
Following his uncle's penchant for international collaborations, Ali Khan has worked with artists including Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam, and on Hollywood film soundtracks such as Dead Man Walking (1995), The Four Feathers (2002) and Mel Gibson's Apocalypto (2006).
Fans can expect a career-spanning set that includes a mix of classic ghazals, pieces from his solo albums and the pick of his Bollywood playback repertoire.

Abdul Jabar Qahraman was meeting supporters in his campaign office in the southern Afghan province of Helmand when a bomb hidden under a sofa exploded on Wednesday.
The blast in the provincial capital Lashkar Gah killed the Afghan election candidate and at least another three people, Interior Minister Wais Ahmad Barmak told reporters. Another three were wounded, while three suspects were detained, he said.
The Taliban – which controls much of Helmand and has vowed to disrupt the October 20 parliamentary elections – claimed responsibility for the attack.
Mr Qahraman was at least the 10th candidate killed so far during the campaign season, and the second from Lashkar Gah this month. Another candidate, Saleh Mohammad Asikzai, was among eight people killed in a suicide attack last week. Most of the slain candidates were murdered in targeted assassinations, including Avtar Singh Khalsa, the first Afghan Sikh to run for the lower house of the parliament.
The same week the Taliban warned candidates to withdraw from the elections. On Wednesday the group issued fresh warnings, calling on educational workers to stop schools from being used as polling centres.
