The Spanish filmmaker Pablo Berger unveiled his movie, Snow White, a non-talkie Oscar contender, at Spain's San Sebastián Film Festival on Saturday.
Screening his film at one of Europe's top international film events, Berger said it was developed "by coincidence" at the same time Michel Hazanavicius made last year's silent Oscar-winner, The Artist.
"In France, at the same time, Hazanavicius had written a script of a similar kind", a movie with a musical soundtrack but no words, Berger said.
"When I heard, about a week before the start of filming, that a film called The Artist was a success at the Cannes film festival, it was a blow."
Nonetheless, Berger's film – Blancanieves in Spanish – has been selected as one of Spain's contenders for the Best Foreign Language Film at next year's Academy Awards.
While Hazanavicius's film was a homage to old American silent movies, Berger's film evokes European cinema of the 1920s. The fairy tale is set in the world of bullfighting in Seville, Spain, and is accompanied by aflamenco soundtrack. * AFP
