The UAE will make a very visible appearance on the world cultural stage, with Sharjah announced as the official guest of honour at the São Paulo International Book Fair.
Recognised as one of the largest and most important literary events in Latin America, Sharjah will take the spotlight at the next edition of the biennial showcase, which is set for August 2018.
The honour reflects the emirate’s status as a cultural and communications hub. The Sharjah International Book Fair — which this year celebrates a landmark 35th edition, taking place November 2-12 — is currently the third largest book fair in the world.
The news was announced by Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, during a visit to Frankfurt Book Fair.
Dr Sheikh Sultan visited the world’s largest trade fair for books on October 20, where he met with key international delegates. Beginning at the Sharjah Book Authority stand, his highness made an extensive tour of the exhibition space, and paid visits to neighbouring stands representing nations across the Arab world.
Luis Antonio Torelli, president of the Brazilian Book Chamber, said: “The unique cultural influence Sharjah brings with it will be a great benefit to visitors that will be able to recognise a little bit of our own Brazilian cultural background.
“It will also be a great opportunity for our readers to discover new stories, a genuine business opportunity for our publishers, and a great honour for the Brazilian Book Chamber.”
Publishing trade relations between Latin America and the Arab World have grown considerably in recent years. United Nations statistics show the UAE benefits from up to 83 per cent of exports between the two territories, a market worth US$861,650 [Dh 3.2 million] annually.
