Salman Khan in daring stunt for new film

Salman Khan was recently spotted hanging from the 40th floor of a building in Poland. Turns out he was on set for his forthcoming action-drama Kick. The actor chose not to go with a stunt double for the scene, which was shot at the Palace of Culture and Science, the tallest building in the country. Kick is due out later this year. It is directed by Sajid Nadiadwala and co-stars Jacqueline Fernandez, Randeep Hooda, Archana Puran Singh and Mithun Chakraborty. – IANS

Canada’s Kiesza tops UK charts

The Canadian singer and songwriter Kiesza grabbed the top spot on Britain's music charts on Sunday with her debut single Hideaway. Kiesza is a classically trained ballerina and a former codebreaker in the Royal Canadian Navy, where she says she began writing songs. She knocked last week's No 1, Nobody to Love by the London-based dance duo Sigma, into second place. In the albums chart, the Scottish singer and songwriter Paolo Nutini snatched the top spot with his new album Caustic Love. Arrest made in Aamir Khan defamation case

Police in the Indian state of Karnataka have arrested a retired merchant navy officer from Manipal for allegedly posting a defamatory message on social media about the Bollywood actor Aamir Khan and his television show Satyameva Jayate, according to The Times of India. The accused, identified as Ajit Vadakayil, 58, was arrested on Thursday, police said. The actor had earlier filed a complaint that "false messages" were being circulated through electronic media that claimed donations sought in his television show were going to a trust working for a particular religion. – The National staff

Joss Whedon releasing film online

Joss Whedon is releasing a film he wrote as a digital download for US$5 (Dh18), bypassing the normal channels of independent film distribution. In a video announcement on Sunday following the premiere of the supernatural romance In Your Eyes at the Tribeca Film Festival, Whedon said the film will immediately be released online via Vimeo On Demand and InYourEyesMovie.com. The film, which Whedon wrote and produced, stars Zoe Kazan and Michael Stahl-David. Whedon is currently working on The Avengers sequel Age of Ultron, to be released next year. – AP

McCartney thrills Uruguayans in packed stadium concert

Paul McCartney wowed fans at an Uruguay concert on Saturday, performing classics from his long career. The former Beatle opened the Montevideo show, part of the Out There world tour, with Eight Days a Week, a 1964 Beatles hit released long before many of the audience members were born. But age was not a factor as Macca, now 71, belted out hits like in the good old days with George, John and Ringo. He also played post-Beatles songs from the 1970s when he was with the band Wings and tracks from the solo period that followed, as well as from his latest album New (2013). The singer will next perform in Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Costa Rica before heading to Japan and South Korea in May. The tour then moves to the United States, according to McCartney's website. – AP

Celina Jaitley to sing for the United Nations

The actress Celina Jaitley, who is the United Nations' goodwill ambassador for their Free and Equal human rights campaign, will make her singing debut to help promote the cause in India. According to The Times of India and the Mirror, the song chosen is the Lata Mangeshkar hit Uthe Sabke Kadam from the Amol Palekar-Tina Munim romantic comedy Baton Baton Mein (1979). The singer and music composer Neeraj Shridhar will be reworking the Rajesh Roshan composition. A music video is also in the pipeline. – The National staff

Kevin Sharp dies at 43

Kevin Sharp, the country music singer who recorded multiple chart-topping songs and battled bone cancer, died on Saturday in California from past stomach surgeries and digestive issues. He was 43. Sharp gained fame with the release of Nobody Knows, a single on his 1996 debut album Measure of a Man. He released two other albums, Love Is in 1998 and Make A Wish in 2005. – AP
