The palm tree, also known as Washingtonia filifera, is best grown in warm climates
As Dubai strengthens its efforts to become a greener city, expect to see more and more palms lining its streets. One species that could make an interesting addition to the landscape is the Washingtonia filifera, or California fan palm, a flowering plant native to the south-west United States. The filifera has the potential to grow to more than 18 metres tall, with a trunk that can reach a metre in diameter. It can grow up to 30 grey-green, fan-shaped leaves. Often cultivated as an ornamental tree, it’s one of the hardiest Coryphoidiae palms. Best grown in warm, temperate climates, the filifera is propagated by seed and can survive in dry summers, making it ideal for the UAE. The filifera will make an attractive addition to any space, and it’s also a good choice for UAE gardeners looking to attract birds to their plot, as a number of species use it as a part of their habitat.
