The Abu Dhabi Festival is not only limited to the capital. As part of the event’s community programme, a range of acts are touring the Emirates with performances and workshops.
Leading the bill is Ashtar Theatre, which is making its UAE debut.
Based in Palestine, the company specialises in bringing Arabic folklore to life through inventive performances. Ashtar is presently in the country for theatre workshops in addition to touring their latest Arabic-language production of Sinbad & the Monster, a play featuring the historic explorer as he attempts to save the planet from ecological disaster.
The company recently performed the play in Abu Dhabi’s Al Mushrif School, Fujairah Cultural Center and the UAE University in Al Ain and goes to Sharjah tomorrow for a series of shows.
The Abu Dhabi Festival’s founder and artistic director Hoda Al Khamis Kanoo says Ashtar Theatre’s involvement underlines the festival commitment to youth engagement.
“It is this quality of youth and community development that the Abu Dhabi Festival embodies,” she said.
“We hope to develop and perpetuate this across the region for many years to come.”
