New Star Trek Beyond trailer gives Dubai a futuristic makeover

The second trailer for Star Trek Beyond has dropped – and it's a somewhat more sombre affair than the previous, slightly gimmicky trailer, which left some fans scratching their heads and wondering if we could expect some kind of quirky interstellar sitcom.

Gone is the Beastie Boys soundtrack, replaced by a more ominous piano backing reflecting the trailer’s altogether darker tone.

It doesn’t give away much about the plot, but we do learn that the USS Enterprise is attacked by a swarm of ships and an alien race of warriors led by Krall (played by Idris Elba, under heavy prosthetic make-up) – and also that Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk seems to be having a bit of a midlife crisis.

Those hoping for a good look at how Dubai looks in the film may be disppointed. There are a couple of brief sightings of what appears to be the crash site that was filmed at DIFC, and we’re fairly confident that some heavily CGI-augmented shots of an alien skyline are from the aerial shooting that took place along SZR and in JLT – including a confirmed sighting of Almas Tower - but you’d need a magnifying glass and a high level of dedication to make out too many specifics.

All in all, though, the trailer looks a lot more promising than the first teaser – Fast and the Furious director Justin Lin's trademark high-octane filmmaking is very much in evidence, as are the new aliens, including Elba's baddie and Sofia Boutella's seemingly more friendly extra-terrestrial. We're fairly confident that when the movie is released in July we'll see plenty more of Dubai too – but judging from the CGI in the trailer, we probably won't be seeing any dreamy lingering shots of the Burj Khalifa or Burj Al Arab.
