Watson 'hates' herself in Bling Ring

Emma Watson talked to MTV about her next movie, Sofia Coppola's Bling Ring, inspired by the real-life story of teenagers who rob the homes of Hollywood's celebrities. The actress admitted audiences will see an unlikeable Watson on the big screen. "This is how much I hate myself in the movie: I don't think I'm going to be able to watch it," said the 22-year-old star. "But this is what's so awesome about my job – getting into the shoes of someone I couldn't relate to." Watson's other forthcoming projects include Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic, Noah, and Guillermo del Toro's Beast, a retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

The premiere of Ang Lee's Life of Pi, a 3D adaptation of the fantastical bestseller, opens the festival. The Sopranos creator David Chase's directorial debut, Not Fade Away, is the midway centrepiece. And the Robert Zemeckis drama Flight, starring Denzel Washington, will close the event. The rest of the 32 movies on the main schedule include films from Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha), Brian De Palma (Passion), Olivier Assayas (Something in the Air), Michael Haneke (Amour, the Palme d'Or winner at Cannes) and Cristian Mungiu (Beyond the Hills). Along with various 50th anniversary celebrations, Nicole Kidman will be feted in a gala. Her film, The Paperboy, directed by Lee Daniels, is a main-screen entry. * AP

New talent kicks off Paris Fashion Week

Paris – the last city after New York, London and Milan to host shows – is offering 95 catwalk spectacles back-to-back over eight days. The event, which kicked off on Tuesday and runs until October 3, opened with Alice Lemoine, the young knitwear designer and Rick Owens alumnus, emerging from the shadows of her former mentor to produce a highly accomplished show in rich spring colours. The Belgian-born designer Anthony Vaccarello, whose star has been on the rise ever since Gwyneth Paltrow graced the cover of Harper's Bazaar in one of his dresses, channelled black and white in an unusual summer collection. Also taking the stage on Tuesday were the South Korean designer Moon Young Hee and the Paris-based Karim Bonnet, whose label, Impasse de la Défense, mixed bold colours with retro and street styles. * AP
