Meryl Streep has accused designer Karl Lagerfeld of spoiling her Oscars night by falsely accusing her of being paid to wear a gown on the red carpet. Streep was alluding to Lagerfeld's claim earlier this week that the Sophie's Choice actress had decided against wearing a Chanel gown at the film's night of nights because she could get paid to wear a dress from a different designer. The story made headlines around the world. Streep dismissed an apology earlier from Lagerfeld, who admitted he had "misunderstood that Ms Streep may have chosen another designer due to remuneration" and said he regretted the controversy. Hollywood actor Bill Paxton dies at 61
Bill Paxton, the prolific actor whose many memorable roles included an astronaut in Apollo 13 and a treasure hunter in Titanic, has died from complications during surgery. He was 61. A family representative issued a statement on Sunday on the death but provided no further details. Paxton, a Texan native, appeared in dozens of movies and television shows and seemed to be around when history was made both on and off screen. As a boy, he was in the crowd that welcomed President John F. Kennedy in Texas on the morning of November 22, 1963, hours before Kennedy was killed in Dallas. Paxton's movie credits included some of the signature works of the past 40 years, from Titanic to The Terminator and Aliens. — Associated Press
Louis Tomlinson feels pressure of going solo
Former One Directioner Louis Tomlinson says he felt the pressure when it came to releasing his first solo single. The singer has collaborated with DJ Steve Aoki for Just Hold On. Tomlinson said he was worried about how his fans would react, reports femalefirst.co.uk. "There's pressure for any artist when they release new music — the idea is the song is for the fans to a certain degree and it's for them to enjoy it," Tomlinson said in a radio interview. "I think there's also a sense of relief because you're going through a process of choosing between different songs and once you've picked it, it feels good. Aamir Khan features as ‘proud dad’ in campaign
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, who has two sons and a daughter, will feature in a television campaign which is a tribute to "proud dads and their daughters". Created and directed by Nitesh Tiwari of Dangal fame, the film for channel Star Plus features Khan as a small-town, middle-class but New-Age father who is confident that his daughters will take ahead the legacy of his business. Khan said this was a great initiative by the channel to bring about change. The film ends with the line: "Kaamyabi na ladka dekhti hai na ladki. Kaamyabi sirf soch dekhti hai (Success does not consider whether one is a boy or girl; it only takes powerful thoughts into account)". Socialite Paris Hilton says she doesn't have time for reality television any longer. The 36-year-old, who appeared on reality show The Simple Life a decade ago, has vowed to never return to her reality TV roots because she is "more interested" in running her business, reports the Daily Mail. "My team gets calls every single day with offers for reality TV but I am so busy running my empire that I don't have time for it," Hilton told Plastik magazine. Ten tax points to be aware of in 2026
1. Domestic VAT refund amendments: request your refund within five years
If a business does not apply for the refund on time, they lose their credit.
2. E-invoicing in the UAE
Businesses should continue preparing for the implementation of e-invoicing in the UAE, with 2026 a preparation and transition period ahead of phased mandatory adoption.
3. More tax audits
Tax authorities are increasingly using data already available across multiple filings to identify audit risks.
4. More beneficial VAT and excise tax penalty regime
Tax disputes are expected to become more frequent and more structured, with clearer administrative objection and appeal processes. The UAE has adopted a new penalty regime for VAT and excise disputes, which now mirrors the penalty regime for corporate tax.
5. Greater emphasis on statutory audit
There is a greater need for the accuracy of financial statements. The International Financial Reporting Standards standards need to be strictly adhered to and, as a result, the quality of the audits will need to increase.
6. Further transfer pricing enforcement
Transfer pricing enforcement, which refers to the practice of establishing prices for internal transactions between related entities, is expected to broaden in scope. The UAE will shortly open the possibility to negotiate advance pricing agreements, or essentially rulings for transfer pricing purposes.
7. Limited time periods for audits
Recent amendments also introduce a default five-year limitation period for tax audits and assessments, subject to specific statutory exceptions. While the standard audit and assessment period is five years, this may be extended to up to 15 years in cases involving fraud or tax evasion.
8. Pillar 2 implementation
Many multinational groups will begin to feel the practical effect of the Domestic Minimum Top-Up Tax (DMTT), the UAE's implementation of the OECD’s global minimum tax under Pillar 2. While the rules apply for financial years starting on or after January 1, 2025, it is 2026 that marks the transition to an operational phase.
9. Reduced compliance obligations for imported goods and services
Businesses that apply the reverse-charge mechanism for VAT purposes in the UAE may benefit from reduced compliance obligations.
10. Substance and CbC reporting focus
Tax authorities are expected to continue strengthening the enforcement of economic substance and Country-by-Country (CbC) reporting frameworks. In the UAE, these regimes are increasingly being used as risk-assessment tools, providing tax authorities with a comprehensive view of multinational groups’ global footprints and enabling them to assess whether profits are aligned with real economic activity.
