Gig news: French jazz, LA funk, Egyptian electronica – and comedy in Al Ain

From jazz ballads to indie-electro wiggles and US funk – and even international comedy in Al Ain – a wave of newly announced gigs are set to light up the coming weeks. Here’s six hot tickets for your diary.

New indie live music concept The Other Side is going from strength to strength, with news of two hot double bills on the way to Dubai.

On Friday August 28 the underground night will host two hip Beirut bands – Zeid and the Wings, the project from Zeid Hamdan of Soapkills fame, and experimentalist collective Loopstache, who are known for kooky covers and live looping.

Then on September 11 the underground happening will host Jordan's Z The People and Egyptian artist Bosaina.

American funnyman Simeon Goodson will headline a comedy spectacle in Al Ain. The New Yorker will top the Comedy Zone bill, which takes place at the Al Ain Rotana on September 3. Also performing is The Black Asian Bonanza, Texas MC Mr Tai Paschall, and Emirati comedian Abdalla Qassab, who will perform in English. Tickets Dh100 from www.ticket-line.ae.

Community music collective Freshly Ground Sounds is preparing kick off a new indoor season at JBR hangout Tribeca. Starting on Sunday September 6, the new Beat the Heat, Cheat the Week concept is described as an "indoor picnic surrounded by indie music", and will showcase upcoming UAE acoustic acts from 6.30pm.

American modern funk trailblazer Dâm-Funk is coming to Dubai.

Known for an inventive mix of funk grooves, hip-hop beats, boogie and disco, the LA-based musician will perform a live show which mixes a DJ set with live synths, synth guitar, vocoders, vocals and more.

Catch him performing tunes from new album Invite The Light at The Music Room on September 18. Support comes from Dust Crew DJs.

The man behind groove-tastic outfit Quantic has added a Dubai date to his upcoming world tour.

Expect a mix of Latin rhythms with funk and jazz approaches when the influential UK-born, NYC-based talent Will Holland comes to town.

Best known as the man behind Quantic and The Quantic Soul Orchestra, Holland will visit The Music Room on September 24, hosted by the Deep Crates Cartel. Tickets Dh100.

French jazz singer Laïka Fatien is to perform an intimate gig in Dubai. The Paris-based talent will take to the stage at Frioul, in Madinat Jumeirah, on October 21 as part of a concert arranged by Alliance Française Dubai.

Fatien has released three albums, including her acclaimed 2008 debut, Misery, A Tribute to Billie Holiday, backed by superstar pianist Robert Glasper.
