Benny Benassi, the Grammy award-winning Italian DJ who has worked with artists from Madonna to David Bowie, was the headliner at the recently opened O1NE club on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. We took a few minutes to chat after his packed-out show.
Welcome back to Abu Dhabi. What are your thoughts on this brand-new venue O1NE and the graffiti wall?
It's amazing. I had a great time. A wonderful experience. The last time we saw you in Abu Dhabi you were opening for Madonna at the du Arena. How was that experience?
It was an honour and very exciting to open for Madonna two nights in a row. It was interesting and fascinating to be in Abu Dhabi although for me it was very hot for an outdoor show!
Your 2003 single Satisfaction was a major hit and went to no 2 in the UK. Do you have plans for another chart hit soon?
Well... it's not me who decides what goes to the top of the charts. If it happens again that's great. But what's important is to be true to the music.
Looking back at this year, what have been the highlights?
There have been several really great moments. The Coachella Festival was definitely one of them.
Any New Year’s resolutions?
To play harder next year!
Where will you be spending new year? Are you performing?
I'll be in Istanbul performing.
Who are your main influences and DJ heroes?
Too many to mention everyone. When I was starting out my heroes were Carl Cox and Erick Morillo.
What music did you listen to growing up?
Electropop and 1980s disco.
Have you had time to check out Abu Dhabi from a tourist point of view?
Not enough, unfortunately. You have Ferrari World and I live only 50 miles from where they make them in northern Italy!
