Eclectic club Superheroes has had a pretty good year so far. Its mix of bass and house beats was named Best Alternative Night by Time Out Dubai, and Best Bass Night at the Hype Awards. Clearly ready to take things to the next level, this weekend the comic-book crusaders go overground with a new Superheroes XXXL concept. Their bumper bill features the dual headliners of British decksmith M J Cole and veteran production duo Stanton Warriors. To get you in the mood, we caught up with one of the two Warriors, Dominic Butler.
Do you view DJ sets as a battle?
Absolutely – a battle to win over the crowd and have them all cheering for “one more” at the end.
And how much do the pair of you fight among yourselves?
Not much, unless we are super jet-lagged and one gets upgraded on a flight but the other doesn’t.
Would you say that the DJ marketplace is oversaturated right now?
A bit. Everyone is a DJ. But to be good you need your own sound, which most don’t have. Anyone can play just the latest big tunes in a row.
Which of your many remixes did you find the most difficult to do?
We only choose tracks that we know we can make sound good. We turned down Britney Spears and The Backstreet Boys back in the day, as the songs of both were rubbish.
If you could steal any DJ’s virtual record bag, whose would it be?
Hmm … Greg Wilson, an old-school electro-funk DJ. He’s got some super-rare jams.
How much longer do you see Stanton Warriors continuing?
Until people stop dancing to our beats.
