Pupils of the Dubai English Speaking College won the Choir of the Year title at ChoirFest Middle East, which was held last weekend.

The Chamber Choir beat eight other secondary school choirs to win the competition held at Dubai College.

The event brought together English, Arabic and Tagalog choirs from across the UAE, with one ensemble from Iraq, for workshops and masterclasses. The competitions were held for secondary school and adults choirs on Saturday.

The festival weekend opened with the gala Opera on the beach event at Jumeirah Beach Hotel where UK’s The Prince Concert performed.

The choir at Dubai English Speaking College consisted of 14 pupils between nine and 13 years of age. They sang Pastoral by Gustav Holst and All Things Bright and Beautiful by Eric Wetherell.

“It was an exceptionally rewarding experience for the students to be measured against other choirs in Dubai. We are all very proud of our students and music staff who made this happen,” said Emma-Jane Weighell, head of the music department at the school.
