ABU DHABI // The first local film funded by Imagenation Abu Dhabi, the filmmaking arm of Abu Dhabi Media Company, begins shooting today.
Sea Shadow, a coming-of-age drama about two 16-year-old boys from Ras al Khaimah, will be shot in three emirates. Nawaf al Janahi, the 33-year-old Emirati director of the film, said he relished the opportunity to bring his vision to life "This is truly a homegrown project, and I look forward to it entertaining local audiences, as well as those abroad," he said.
The story follows Mansour, played by Omar Almulla, and Kaltham, played by Neven Madi, who live in an Emirati neighbourhood in RAK. A journey to Abu Dhabi becomes one of self-discovery as they encounter first loves, difficult family relationships and a clash of cultural values. It is Mr al Janahi's second feature film. His 2009 crime drama, The Circle, was screened at film festivals in the region and in Europe.
Stefan Brunner, the Imagenation's chief operating officer, said: "Our brilliant line-up of esteemed Emirati actors as well as fresh young faces, coupled with a top international, Arab and emerging Emirati crew, will ensure that the film is produced according to global standards of filmmaking." It is the first of six Emirati-directed projects, from original stories by Emiratis, to be produced by Imagenation.
