The Broadway play Red, which follows the story of celebrated artist Mark Rothko — one of the leaders of the abstract expressionist art movement — will premiere at The Junction in Alserkal Avenue, Dubai on Saturday, October 29.
Written by Academy Award nominated writer John Logan, the play centres on Rothko’s decision to turn down a commission from the Four season’s restaurant in New York to paint a series of wall murals.
The story is told from the point of view of his assistant Ken, who goes from a state of intimidation at working with the famous artist to actively opposing Rothko’s decisions. It ends in a passionate stand off between the two men.
The production will be directed by Alex Broun, the founder of Short+Sweet Dubai, and will star Osman Aboubakr as Rothko. Aboubakr has been training with Dubai artist Lindsey Gildea to learn Rothko’s painting techniques as the play will feature a live recreation of one of his art works.
The play will open at the newly built theatre space, The Junction in Alserkal Avenue, at 7pm on Saturday, October 29. It will then move to thejamjar for some special ‘on location’ performances on November 3-5 and 10-12. To book tickets at email info@thejunctiondubai.com or call The Junction on 0433 88 525
