Big B courted for Hollywood adaptation
After making his Hollywood debut in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, the veteran Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan is in talks for another international production: an adaptation of the Indian author Vikas Swarup's Six Suspects. Bachchan has reportedly been approached by BBC and Starfield Productions to star in the movie, set to be directed by the Argentinian filmmaker Pablo Trapero. Swarup's novel Q&A was previously adapted by Danny Boyle into Slumdog Millionaire. – IANS
Springsteen’s new album released early
Bruce Springsteen's latest album, High Hopes, was available for purchase and download via Amazon on Saturday, weeks ahead of its supposed January 14 release. Salman Khan to host Star Guild Awards
The Bollywood actor Salman Khan has signed on to host the ninth edition of the Star Guild Awards after his stint as the presenter last year. The January 16 event will honour achievements in Indian cinema and television. "The industry has witnessed an incredible year in 2013 with regards to the quality of content produced. We are very excited and look forward to the ceremony," said Mukesh Bhatt, the president of The Film & Television Producers Guild of India. Winners are chosen by the guild's 160 members. – IANS
Stevie Nicks officiates Carlton’s wedding
Stevie Nicks performed the wedding ceremony of Vanessa Carlton and the Deer Tick's lead singer John McCauley on Friday. "Thanks Stevie for marrying us!" the 33-year-old Carlton later posted on Instagram along with the couple's photo with the Fleetwood Mac singer. Carlton is best known for her 2002 debut single A Thousand Miles. – IANS

Skewed figures
In the village of Mevagissey in southwest England the housing stock has doubled in the last century while the number of residents is half the historic high. The village's Neighbourhood Development Plan states that 26% of homes are holiday retreats. Prices are high, averaging around £300,000, £50,000 more than the Cornish average of £250,000. The local average wage is £15,458.
The alternatives
• Founded in 2014, Telr is a payment aggregator and gateway with an office in Silicon Oasis. It’s e-commerce entry plan costs Dh349 monthly (plus VAT). QR codes direct customers to an online payment page and merchants can generate payments through messaging apps.
• Business Bay’s Pallapay claims 40,000-plus active merchants who can invoice customers and receive payment by card. Fees range from 1.99 per cent plus Dh1 per transaction depending on payment method and location, such as online or via UAE mobile.
• Tap started in May 2013 in Kuwait, allowing Middle East businesses to bill, accept, receive and make payments online “easier, faster and smoother” via goSell and goCollect. It supports more than 10,000 merchants. Monthly fees range from US$65-100, plus card charges of 2.75-3.75 per cent and Dh1.2 per sale.
• 2checkout’s “all-in-one payment gateway and merchant account” accepts payments in 200-plus markets for 2.4-3.9 per cent, plus a Dh1.2-Dh1.8 currency conversion charge. The US provider processes online shop and mobile transactions and has 17,000-plus active digital commerce users.
• PayPal is probably the best-known online goods payment method - usually used for eBay purchases - but can be used to receive funds, providing everyone’s signed up. Costs from 2.9 per cent plus Dh1.2 per transaction.
How has net migration to UK changed?
The figure was broadly flat immediately before the Covid-19 pandemic, standing at 216,000 in the year to June 2018 and 224,000 in the year to June 2019.
It then dropped to an estimated 111,000 in the year to June 2020 when restrictions introduced during the pandemic limited travel and movement.
The total rose to 254,000 in the year to June 2021, followed by steep jumps to 634,000 in the year to June 2022 and 906,000 in the year to June 2023.
The latest available figure of 728,000 for the 12 months to June 2024 suggests levels are starting to decrease.

UK's plans to cut net migration
Under the UK government’s proposals, migrants will have to spend 10 years in the UK before being able to apply for citizenship.
Skilled worker visas will require a university degree, and there will be tighter restrictions on recruitment for jobs with skills shortages.
But what are described as "high-contributing" individuals such as doctors and nurses could be fast-tracked through the system.
Language requirements will be increased for all immigration routes to ensure a higher level of English.
Rules will also be laid out for adult dependants, meaning they will have to demonstrate a basic understanding of the language.
The plans also call for stricter tests for colleges and universities offering places to foreign students and a reduction in the time graduates can remain in the UK after their studies from two years to 18 months.
